May I Introduce Myself? (SOLS 11)

I heard someone say, "Young lady, you should put your coat on before you catch a cold."

I turned to see a handsome man walking behind me.  "No, way!" I respond.  "I just got over a really bad cold."  He walks over to me and extends his hand.  "May I introduce myself?" There's a short pause.  I reach for his hand, a bit nervously.  "My name is Dennis." he continues.  "It's nice to meet you Dennis, I'm Valerie." I say.

It's February, but the weather is mild and spring like.  He continues to explain that he's been watching me for several weeks and wanted to finally meet me.  We exchange a few more pleasantries, and he walks off.  Meanwhile, my mother has been walking a few feet ahead of us.  When he is far enough away, her excitement bubbles over.  "Wow! Where did he go?  Do you still see him?" she says with a bit too much enthusiasm in her voice.

I just turned 30 a week ago.  I had been hoping to meet someone nice for about three years now, and I wasn't about to pin all of my hopes on this one single introduction.  "I don't no where he went, mother, and I really don't care."  Suddenly, a black car pulls out of a nearby parking lot.  "It's him!" she says, the excitement having returned to her voice.  "He's looking at you through the rear view mirror." she continues.  And he really was.  Now I'm in for it.  It's going to be a long drive home.

    1. Thanks so much. I married him two years later. I just remember it like it was yesterday.

  2. I completely understand your mother's excitement. My daughter is almost 30 and I don't want her going through life alone, plus she wants a family, plus I want grandchildren, the clock is ticking girls! Oh my goodness, I sound horrible. Well, Thanks Valerie, now I know what I can write about tomorrow!

    1. Yes, I think my mother did feel that way. I was the last of her four daughters to marry. But, I did marry him two years later and all is well. Your daughter will meet that special someone, probably when she least expects.

  3. I could feel all the emotions that those situations stir up. Excitement, nervous, embarrassment, .... great slice and it left me wanting to read more.

  4. So cute! I felt like I was walking right along with you and your mom. Great dialogue. My favorite line, "I don't no where he went, mother, and I really don't care." said with complete indifference! Great contrast then how he pulls up right alonside you in his car, because really...what could come from an introduction? I guess a lot!

I remember the first time I met my husband, swinging my legs over the railing and he caught me off guard sitting at the dining room table. I think I'll write more about it. Good idea!

  7. You were so independent saying I don't care. How nice that he came back and you married. Did it bother you that he said he'd been watching you for three weeks? You just never know who is looking and what they are thinking. I wrote about meeting my husband on my Feb. 14 slice. He didn't like me, at first.

    1. It didn't bother me that he had been watching me, since it was at church. I'll have to read the slice about your husband next. Thanks for the comments.

That day must have been a bit like the day today in Michigan!

  9. I agree, what a good idea for a slice! I liked hearing your mother's voice! You were so unsure, but then you wrote, "and he really was." Nice ending.

  10. Valerie,
I enjoyed the story. I had to smile at your mom's excitement over this little introduction. I can picture her "bubbling over with excitement." I can only imagine her reaction when the two of you finally went out for an evening. It was a great meeting story. Always fun to hear how people have met their spouses. I have to admit as soon as I got to the "end" I searched to find more. I wanted to hear the rest of the story. :o) Enjoyable slice.

  11. Haha, I like the way you interspersed your own reactions with your mom's comments. So entertaining! I met my husband in college; we lived on the same floor of our dorm and had many of the same classes our freshman year. We grew our friendship going to and from class, and eating meals together. Then all of a sudden, friendship turned into love. Like elsie, I wrote about it on my Valentine's Day post: http://ihabloespanglish.blogspot.com/2012/02/first-valentines-day.html
